The BBS Pyrovent smoke-venting roof light is designed to operate automatically in the event of a fire or smoke alarm being activated.

For areas with zero or low wind exposure, the unit can be fitted with an electro-magnetic catch that is released on activation of the alarm. The top is then sprung open to a fully open position by gas compression struts. In areas where wind exposure is likely, the unit is fitted with electronic lifting actuators. Additionally, with the correct electrical configuration, the roof lights can be used for controllable ventilation and access.

Depending on the location in the building, different top components for the unit are available – polycarbonate domes, single or double-glazed Pyro-shield glass or a solid flat insulated panel.

Specialist installations for these products, to name a few are; Council Chambers Edinburgh, where a series of mono-pitch north-light, adapter kerb rooflights were installed, incorporating electronically operated opening panels for smoke and natural ventilation and Atrium Court, Glasgow, where old existing louvre vent units were removed from an existing glazed atrium and replaced with BBS adapter kerb units, fitted with hinged opening glazed panels and operated by Micro XL 24 volt chain actuators.

BBS also manufacture and install many bespoke glazing products all of which are available through HASL and include roof lights, glazed corridors, glazed canopies, smoker shelters and electric sliding roof lights, all of which are manufactured to suit the client’s individual requirements, where assistance in design is also available.

BBS glazing systems are designed to accommodate both glass and polycarbonate, with framework finishes offered in either mill finish aluminium, or polyester powder coating to any BS, or RAL colour.

Testament that BBS glazed structures are designed and built to a very high standard was the manufacture and installation of three structural glazed passenger walkways, one at 96.0m long on Stornoway ferry pier, Orkney and one at 75.0m long on Craignure ferry pier, Isle of Mull. Over the past five years all three walkways have been subject to some of the fiercest hurricane force gales the UK has experienced, with all three walkways surviving this unscathed.

Another BBS specialist walkway installation was Higford Hall special needs school, Shropshire where BBS were involved in the design manufacture and installation of a meandering walkway with off shoot spurs incorporating hexagonal pods, each of which houses different themes and effects for the children.

HASL will provide control systems to operate BBS products, complementary automatically operating louvres and other associated products alongside a fully operational sub-contract division in this field.

This suite of products is frequently designed to work in harmony to provide a complete smoke ventilation system.

BBS, along with HASL offer full technical representation throughout the UK, where representatives are available to visit the client’s office, or site, to discuss their individual requirements, we also offer a full CAD design facility, where working drawings are provided for the clients approval prior to the manufacture of any specialist structure.
